Mis/Disinformation

The Problem: Deliberately fabricated disinformation and inadvertent spread of misinformation threaten to subvert truth, polarize societies, and disrupt democratic processes in the global south. Gendered, Targeted and Coordinated campaigns leverage online networks to rapidly disseminate deceptive narratives and sow social discord.

Our Strategy

First, we conduct rigorous investigations to expose disinformation sources, tactics, and real-world impacts in the global south. Our findings inform development of detection tools and countermeasures.

Second, we work with civil society partners to build public resilience against misinformation through media literacy programs. Third, we advocate for policy reforms and self-regulation to deter purveyors of disinformation by sharing some of the signals and output with tech companies like Twitter/X and Facebook/Meta.

Our work under the Africa Digital Rights Fund working with CIPESA to monitor African Elections is an example of the work around this… upcoming elections 2024 we’re monitoring include Rwanda, Ghana, Tunisia, South Sudan, Namibia and Mozambique.

Our ongoing investigations around past elections in Uganda 2021, Kenya 2022 and Nigeria 2023.
